Iraqi Trucker In the USA?
I stood on the onramp to I-84 East on the edge of Troutdale, Oregon the other night.
And a big eighteen-wheeler stopped and I got a ride.
That's not unusual. I get rides with truckers all the time.
But this one was bit different.
I stepped into a HUGE 2004 Volvo tractor with a 53 foot trailer.
And the tractor was DRESSED...let me tell ya!
I had never been inside such a thing!
The driver swore he was 34 although he didn't look a day over 21.
He spoke broken English and told me that he has been in the United States for five years. He said that he was from the Middle East.
I only believe half of what he told me.
He said that: "Bush is good...he has to do what he doing...he has no choice." "Palestinian are bad...everything happen bad because Palestinians...Bush is good." "I never go to Iraq...not ever again."
Iraq? Palestinians? Bush is good?
Say WHAT?!
I asked him what he was hauling. And I wondered how he had managed to fly through the fan and become so well-established in the United States.
He never fully explained himself. And he never did tell me what he was hauling.

Shelter Update: Klamath Falls, Oregon
Klamath Falls, Oregon is a bit off the beaten path. It is situated on routes 97 and 66...Just north of the California border and east of Ashland, Oregon.
It is a quiet place for the most part and has the nicest mission that I have visited on the trip.
The staff lady that runs the house is a sweetheart but no dummy. She is firm but fair.
We get along very well.
The house is beautiful...Featuring lace curtains, large plants and real beds covered in homemade quilts.
The food is excellent.
The program is very comprehensive and impressive.
When I leave tomorrow I will do it with a smile on my face.
It is a quiet place for the most part and has the nicest mission that I have visited on the trip.

Shelter Report: Redding, California
Redding, California has a nice little shelter where I got two good meals, a shower and a comfy place to sleep...Albeit on the floor.
The only problem appeared to be hygienic as everyone was subjected to a head-lice check.
Thankfully I passed. A few other people didn't.
I covered my head with a plastic shower cap overnight and left with a quickness the following morning.

Shelter Update: North Platte, Nebraska
I noticed the violations right away as I walked up the stairs to the "women's dorm" at the mission in North Platte, Nebraska:
The steps are steep and the handrail was just about ready to come right out of the wall.
There was no red exit light anywhere.
One smoke alarm was broken.
And the building is an old, rundown tinder-box.
The staff there tried to get me to do some work for an old woman with impaired hearing and no clear pattern of speech.
In other words: she didn't talk...She pointed and expected me to understand her.
I didn't.
Her place creeped me out and so did she.
I left.
The shelter kicked me out.
I hitched down to a point where a trucker named Jude picked me up and took me all the way to Reno, Nevada.
I enjoyed every minute of our time together.
And I now have his cell phone number.

I got off a bus in Medford, Oregon recently and went to the homeless shelter with the intention of staying there for the night. I only wanted to stay there for one night. Period.
And after waiting far longer than I should have, I finally got in the front door. No thanks to the woman who was staffing the place that night. Oh no. The door was opened by a group of residents who were returning from some religious meeting.
Everything went pretty well until I went up the stairs and attempted to get ready for bed.
The staff person wanted me to hurry up because they turned the lights out in the dorm at [get this] 8:30 pm on the freaking dot!
Yup.
I tried unsuccessfully to explain to her that I had to re-arrange things in my big backpack in order to get my toothbrush and my next day's clothes out.
She got impatient and then I told her that I would do it in the bathroom. And I assured her that I only needed a few minutes.
At that point she told me to "drop the attitude" and told me to leave the shelter.
As a result, I ended up walking down a very dark stretch of I-5 with a flashlight. I walked all night...To a small town called Talent, Oregon.
A REAL Christian man picked me up there and took me to nearby Ashland where I finally got some decent assistance.
I am sending email to the City of Medford.

Sex crimes are ALL violent in that they create trauma...at the very least...in the life of their victim.
No victim ever comes out of a sex abuse crime unscathed.

Hitchhiking And Pervert Truckers

I met one outside of Sacramento, California who wined me, dined me and then kicked me out of his truck when I wouldn't...ahem...reciprocate.
HAH!
This guy drove over six-hundred miles a day over the two days that I rode with him.
And then he bought himself a twelve-pack of beer and emptied every last one of those cans. He then slept for six hours. And then pulled his big rig back out onto the interstate.
On the second night he delivered his inebriated ultimatum and I bailed.
This driver is still out on the road.

Ruthie On The Road--The Dalles, Oregon

Cousins is located at The Dalles...which is about 100 miles east of Portland, Oregon.
I stayed there and really enjoyed myself.
If you want a great host [talk to Barb] and a SUPERCLEAN room...then stay at Cousins when you visit Oregon.
The only drawback that I encountered while I was there was when I ordered food from the cafe.
The workers got the order goofed-up and I ended up leaving and ordering a pizza, instead.
Other than that...my stay at Cousins was excellent!

I am on the road right now and have spent the past five days in Ontario, Oregon.
Ontario is situated near the Idaho border.
It's a whistle-stop to be sure but a deluxe one, nevertheless.
There are some very nice people living in this town. I have enjoyed everyone from the lady at the bus station to the people at the two motels that I stayed at.
A lady named Marge has been my "buddy" since I've been here and she deserves a medal for being so helpful to me.
I had a problem with one of my fingers and had to go to the hospital. She went right along with me and stayed with me the whole time.
The hospital was a total disappointment and so was the cab company that ended up ripping me off.
Note to everyone:
Bring your own wheels and don't get sick in Ontario, Oregon!
[2008 UPDATE: Life has improved in Ontario, Oregon. I know this because I am spending this winter in the Ontario area.]
